Hi,
March 21st marks a significant observance: International
Day of Forests. The day raises awareness of the importance of
all types of forests across the world, for the benefit of current and
future generations.
From the water we drink to the air we breathe, forests are an
ecosystem that we all depend on. More than 1 billion people worldwide
depend on our forests for their livelihoods. Forests are also critical
reserves of biodiversity, providing habitat for many thousands of
species.
As the world begins to see the continuing effects of climate change
and deforestation, it is vital that restoration efforts are continued
and that rural and urban people are empowered to conserve, repair, and
restore tree cover to their lands and rebuild local economies.
The Canopy Project improves our shared
environment by planting trees across the globe. Since
2010, EARTHDAY.ORG has planted tens of millions of trees with The
Canopy Project, working to strengthen communities worldwide.
We work with global partners to reforest areas in dire need of
rehabilitation, including areas with some of the world’s communities
most at-risk from climate change and environmental degradation.
On this International Day of Forests, join us in leading
the charge to reforest our world’s canopy. Since the
beginning of the 20th century, the world’s forests have lost about 20%
of their coverage. With your help we can begin to reverse the damage
that’s been done through industry and deforestation.
In unity,
Kathleen Rogers President
