Folks, the economic and social impact of Alabama’s historically Black colleges and universities are invaluable. That’s why it’s so important that these institutions have the support they need to continue bolstering our communities.

Alabama is home to 15 HBCUs – more than any other state in the country. These institutions have shaped the history and character of our state, by churning out highly qualified graduates and by spurring on Alabama’s economy.

HBCUs have been a cornerstone of the Black community for generations. Every year, young Black women and men graduate from HBCUs and go on to create success for themselves and their families. These institutions foster a sense of community and belonging while setting the standard for excellence in education.

Many of Alabama’s doctors, lawyers, engineers, and artists received their education from HBCUs. Their impact on our community is immeasurable. Alabama would not be what it is today without the hard work and dedication of HBCU graduates.

The 15 HBCUs in Alabama produced over 15,000 jobs and $1.5 billion in total economic impact in 2014 alone. While working and studying, HBCU students and faculty continuously strengthen our state’s economy. Meanwhile, graduates from these schools have gone on to bolster our state’s workforce and set a shining example of hard work and success.

President Biden’s American Rescue Plan provided a historic $334 million for Alabama’s HBCUs – the most of any state. I’m proud to have supported legislation that gives back to these community-building institutions, but there’s still work to be done. If we want these vital institutions to continue educating and inspiring communities across Alabama, we have to raise our voices to support them.
