Friends,
When I was elected as Mayor of Providence, I was the first openly gay elected mayor of a state capital in the country. Later when I was sworn in as a United States Representative, I became only the fourth openly gay member of Congress. We’ve come so far since then — including passing the Equality Act in the House last year.
Now as co-chair of Equality PAC, it is my honor to support LGBTQ+ candidates across the country achieving their own set of firsts. When Clay Aiken is elected to represent North Carolina, he will make history as the first openly gay member of Congress representing the South.
But sometimes being the first is just the beginning of the story.
In the LGBTQ+ community we often talk about how representation without protection is dangerous. But Clay doesn’t just provide representation for LGBTQ+ folks across the South, he’s got plans to fight for equality as well. Standing up for what is right might not always be safe, but it may make others safer. I applaud Clay’s bravery and courage.
Becoming a first was only the start of my journey. Since then, I’ve been honored to help and advocate for families across the country. I can only imagine the good that Clay will do once he becomes the first.
