A personal message from Terri Sewell

Folks —

As a third-generation Selmian, I’m proud of my roots. The history of my family and my hometown runs deep in the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt and the Civil Rights Movement.

I’m going to share a little bit more about my family’s story with you, but first, I need to know if you’ll chip in to help me win re-election in Alabama’s 7th District?

Growing up, I saw firsthand the hard work that my mother and father put in to keep our family afloat. My father was a math teacher and my mother was a school librarian who went on to become the first Black woman elected to Selma’s city council.

Just a generation before my parents, my grandfather was a hard-working sharecropper who labored in the same rich soil that the Black Belt was named after.

It was through these examples that I learned the values of hard work and persistence. It’s what inspired me to dream big as a little girl and eventually pushed me to follow in the footsteps of my mother.

To honor my family and community, I ran for and won my election to Congress and became the first Black woman to represent my home district.

I carry the history of my hometown close to my heart when I’m fighting on the floor of the House. Whenever I get tired, I remember the perseverance that the Foot Soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement showed when they marched over the Edmund Pettus Bridge for our freedoms.

While in Congress, I’ve made it my mission to fight for our freedoms that have come under attack, including the right to vote. Republicans are set on doing everything they can to strip this right away from groups who they believe will vote against them – namely, people of color.

I introduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect the rights that were fought for and won by generations that have come before me – including my mother, father, and grandparents.

After serving in Congress for a decade, I can tell you this for certain: it takes grit to fight for what’s right. But, fighting for hardworking families across my district will always be worth it.

Now, I’m asking you to join me in this fight: will you chip in $25 to support my re-election campaign and help me pave the way towards a brighter future for folks across the Black Belt?
