John,

Take a look at your gas and electric bills. Do you see a charge for “membership dues”?

Gas and electric companies are charging customers tens of millions of dollars so they can partner with utility trade group lobbyists to fight clean energy policies and prevent communities from phasing out fracked gas – something we must do to avoid the worst of climate chaos.

This outrageous partnership between utility trade groups and your local utilities is stalling the transition to clean energy for the sake of corporate profits. These trade groups have even worked to stop the expansion of rooftop solar projects!

But we can put an end to this scam. Food & Water Watch is putting pressure on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to change the way gas and electric companies handle trade group dues. There’s no way gas and electric companies should be charging their customers to stop the progress toward renewable energy that the public demands, especially under the guise of “membership dues.”

Take action to stop utility companies from forcing ratepayers to fund membership fees for trade groups. Submit your public comment to FERC today!

FERC is currently helping utility companies across the country determine which expenses they can charge to customers, and which should be borne by the utility itself. The problem? The current system treats trade group dues as “recoverable,” meaning the costs can be passed on to you!

Join us in demanding that FERC force utilities to pay lobbying dues themselves and stop placing the financial burden on customers!

Gas and electric companies have entrenched fossil fuel interests. They use trade groups to derail ambitious climate change legislation and common sense regulations. As climate change accelerates, we shouldn’t be funding groups fighting against clean energy policies.

You can bet FERC is already hearing plenty from utility companies on this decision. Make sure they hear from YOU: Submit a public comment before the deadline on Wednesday, March 23.
