John,
Right now, members of Congress are allowed to make huge profits from buying stocks that they know will perform well based on pending legislation and private briefings.
This is unacceptable. Owning and trading individual stocks make members of Congress and their families financial stakeholders in the industries they were elected to oversee. We should trust that our elected officials are legislating on behalf of their constituents, not their personal financial interests.
There are multiple bills under consideration in Congress that would end this corrupt practice, but many lawmakers have a financial incentive to maintain the status quo and keep the rules as they are.
Elected officials shouldn’t be able to profit from their positions of power. If you agree, will you send a message to your Representative to let them know it’s time to ban all members of Congress and their families from profiting through ownership of individual stocks.
As long as members of Congress and their families are allowed to own and trade individual stocks, our ability to make progress on priorities like climate change, health care, and prescription drugs is threatened. Stock trades will continue to fuel policies that profit big corporations AND Members of Congress, but NOT benefit the people.
If we’re going to change Washington to make it work for the people, we must implement a ban on members of Congress and their families trading stocks. If you’re with us, will you send a message to your Congressperson and let them know it’s time for a ban on stock trading for members of Congress.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
