Dear John,
Monday is the first day of hearings for Supreme Court Nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Judge Jackson will leave the hearing room on Wednesday having shown committee members and the nation her deep commitment to equal justice and protecting the rights of all of us, not just the wealthy and powerful.
We expect her statement and answers to remove any doubt that she is among the most eminently qualified nominees ever to be considered for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. Her broad legal experience as a judge, member of the bipartisan U.S. Sentencing Commission, federal public defender, and in private practice leave no doubt that she is fit to be a Supreme Court Justice.
Here’s a guide to how the week will proceed:
The hearings schedule
- Monday, March 21, beginning at 11AM ET: The first day of the hearings will consist of ten-minute opening statements from senators, five-minute statements from the individuals chosen to introduce Judge Jackson, and a ten-minute opening statement from the nominee herself. Senators will not ask Judge Jackson questions on Monday.
-
Tuesday, March 22: Questioning of the nominee begins at 9AM ET. The first round of questions will allow 30 minutes of questioning per senator, in order of seniority. This questioning could continue well into the evening.
-
Wednesday, March 23: Round two of questioning begins at 9AM ET, with 20 minutes per senator. The committee then meets behind closed doors to discuss the results of Judge Jackson’s FBI background check (this is done for every Supreme Court nominee).
-
Thursday, March 24: Starting at 9AM ET, the committee will hear from representatives of the American Bar Association and other outside witnesses about the qualifications and experience of the nominee.
