What this really means is that Ohioans can carry concealed firearms in public spaces WITHOUT a permit, background check, or gun safety training. This reckless law promotes the opposite of gun safety and should concern all Americans, and let me explain why, John.
Right now, the U.S. Supreme Court is preparing to rule on an NRA-backed case that has the potential to allow the concealed carrying of firearms in EVERY state, not just Ohio. That means — if the NRA gets the Supreme Court ruling it desires — citizens would be free to carry firearms in our neighborhoods, places of worship, shopping centers, and more.
This case has the potential to undermine countless state and local gun safety laws that we’ve fought for years to enact. It would be the NRA's and Second Amendment extremists’ dream come true. Why? Because fewer gun laws means more guns everywhere, which equals more gun sales for the multi-billion dollar gun industry and the politicians who are bankrolled by it.
But make no mistake, we know that more firearms in public places — especially in times of conflict or confrontation — is a recipe for disaster. Just last year on the streets of Kenosha, WI, two people were shot and killed while protesting. Our neighborhoods should not feel like a warzone, John, and our First Amendment rights shouldn’t be threatened by our Second Amendment rights…
It’s why Brady is fighting tirelessly against the NRA’s “guns everywhere agenda.” We submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court, defending all Americans' constitutional right to live without the fear of being shot and killed. While we know we can't make a decision for the Supreme Court, we have to make it clear that common-sense gun safety laws are not at odds with Second Amendment rights and that the majority of Americans support bipartisan gun safety laws that save lives.
But, John, we need to hear from you ASAP: The Supreme Court will issue a decision on this case in the months ahead. Will you take our poll on the concealed carrying of firearms? Your response will help us show that all Americans — gun owners and non-gun owners alike — are for gun safety, and not the NRA’s reckless guns everywhere agenda.

Six Years Have Passed Since the Unintentional Shooting of J.R. Gustafson — Brady Legal Continues to Demand Justice

Tomorrow marks six years since 13-year-old J.R. Gustafson was shot and killed in an unintentional shooting. On behalf of J.R. and his family, Brady Legal sued the gun manufacturer and dealer. Our suit claims that this tragedy could have been prevented had the manufacturer included common-sense safety features on the firearm — including a magazine disconnect safety feature — that disables the gun when the magazine is removed.
So, why hasn’t J.R.’s case been resolved yet? Three words: industry special protections. An unjust federal law called the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) gives the gun industry special, unparalleled protection from civil liability — unlike any other industry in America.
Two years ago, Brady Legal made history after a Pennsylvania appeals court struck down the harmful gun industry protection law as unconstitutional, even saying it was “repugnant to the Constitution of the United States.” We couldn’t agree more. The decision is now under full review and we are waiting for next steps. As we await a decision from the court, please join us in honoring J.R.’s life with action:

Episode 176 — You Can't Sell Guns Like Bananas and Ice Cream: Brady Legal vs Straw Purchasers
On November 6, 2015, a gun was acquired illegally via straw purchase. The next day, Donald Rice and his wife Ladonna were shot and killed with that same gun during a home robbery. The shooters were apprehended, but questions were raised: How did they get access to the gun?
In the aftermath of this tragedy, Brady Legal, outside council, and Donald and Ladonna's family brought a lawsuit against the seller who allowed the straw purchase. This week, we're joined by Judy Miller, Donald's sister, Bill Miller, Judy's husband, and Senior Counsel for Brady Legal Erin Davis to discuss what happened to Donald and Ladonna and how Brady legal helped in seeking justice on their behalf.

This week, we’re recognizing U.S. Army veteran and activist Bobby Holley.

Weeks ago, Holley, 76, completed a 21-mile crawl to call for an end to gun violence and unsolved murders in Michigan and across the nation. Holley brought attention to how easy access to firearms is a catalyst for gun violence, especially for youth and teens:
“We’re not trying to get rid of anybody’s guns as far as the legal guns but most kids, they’re 14 years old and got a gun? No way...15 years old and got a gun? They don’t give permission to kids like that. They’re too young.”
We thank Holley for his heroic activism to raise awareness about gun violence in America. It will take all of us — concerned citizens, activists, survivors, veterans, and more — to truly end America’s gun violence epidemic.
