I want to take you back to my time as President
Trump's Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. I was America’s most senior spy, leading the world’s finest intelligence service.
On
this occasion, I was climbing out of a plane in the dark of the night. I can't tell you exactly where I was, but I can tell you it was a very
challenging part of the world.
I’m greeted by a member of the ground crew whose name I never knew. Imagine my surprise when he welcomed me, reached
out to shake my hand and placed in it a palm-sized, tattered Bible.
When I got in my vehicle, I read the hand-written note inside it: “Mr. Director, you have been a light to me
and to the world. Bless you.”
I later
learned that this gentleman worked for the U.S. State Department.
I had no idea I would one day become America’s 70th Secretary of State, having led him and his colleagues. But I did know that, for at
least one person, I had been a light.
This
little story is not about me though. This story is about each of us and the mission we have to manifest reverence for our Lord in every
single thing we do.
The challenge for each of us is to be that
light, no matter where you are or what you do.
In order to be that light, we need to ensure that the federal government does not limit our ability to live out our
faith.
I know some people in the
media will break out the pitchforks when they hear that I ask God for direction in my work. But that isn’t a new idea.
Let's be clear:
any nation that disregards the essential right of religious freedom cannot claim to be good in any other measure. Full
stop.
Our founders regarded religious freedom as an absolutely essential right of mankind and central to
our founding. Religious freedom is the first freedom according to the Constitution.
Sadly, religious freedom, especially for followers of Christ,
is under increasing attack right here in the United States from our own government. We’ve seen government mandates that have forced churches to
close their doors and new laws that make it harder for Americans to live out their faith.
I’m calling on you to join me in defending
religious freedom - both here at home and abroad.
Let us renew our commitment to putting our faith and America and our values first—because when we do, we prosper and the
whole world prospers and is peaceful. When America leads from the front and not from behind, we are a better nation.
Unapologetically
American,
Mike Pompeo
70th Secretary of State
