John,
While the world continues to watch and take action against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we’ve felt that we have to speak up in light of recent events. With the current extreme volatility in the fossil fuel market and record-high gas prices, the Russian-Ukrainian war has made it clear that our nation’s oil dependency is not only an energy issue but also a national security issue.
While there is no question that President Biden’s action to ban Russian oil imports was the right move, replacing Russian oil won’t come easy. Last year, the United States imported 73 million barrels of Russian crude oil, an enormous quantity that we will struggle to simply replace.
The Biden administration has begun putting pressure on American oil producers to increase their crude oil production. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated in a press conference: We’re asking [oil producing companies] to go use the approved permits, use the unused space and go get more supply out of the ground in our own country.” It’s important to note that many of these permits are on public lands.
But with oil production already below pre-pandemic levels and the fact that production planning is determined years in advance, it will be near impossible for domestically produced oil to make up the import deficit in the near-term.
However, sustainable options are here and ready-to-go, and the opportunity stands right before us. A suite of new clean energy policies are currently being debated in Congress. Those policies would cut the country’s oil demand to offset Russian imports for years to come and would also significantly decrease natural gas demand by utilizing technologies already available to us. These policies would address both our dependency on foreign oil and gas as well as our need to make long-lasting progress towards combating climate change. Both of these crises need to be addressed without delay, and fortunately, the solution is one and the same.
Renewable energy leads to national security. SEEC PAC stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and supports the Biden administration’s decision to hold Putin accountable through the Russian oil ban. As Congress’ strongest voices for transitioning to sustainable energy, SEEC stands ready to take action to end our country’s dependence on oil, particularly the foreign oil of autocratic states like Russia.
