The war abroad... and the war (and peace) at home

The horrible images coming out of Ukraine remind us of the real-world stakes for the West in standing up to Vladimir Putin.

The stakes at home are immeasurable as well.

I would like you to watch two short videos that I think sum up the week and the passion that all of us are feeling to help the cause of freedom.

First, a reminder that the reason we are energetic supporters of our No Labels movement is not really “politics” (as it is commonly practiced) but about helping all of humanity, including those overseas and in the United States who are the most vulnerable, especially children.

Second is an illustration of the intense involvement our allies on Capitol Hill have in the current debate, seen here reacting to President Zelenskyy’s moving address to Congress.

We continue to see our allies working together to press for more help for President Zelenskyy.

As Problem Solvers Caucus Co-chair Brian Fitzpatrick has so passionately articulated, as much as the United States has done, we need to take additional steps in three areas: more complete sanctions against Russia, more military assistance to Ukraine, and greater efforts to head off a humanitarian and refugee crisis in Europe.

We urge you to continue to fight with us to press for more help for the Ukrainians.

Also know that we are hard at work on the midterm elections, to elect as many problem solvers to the House and Senate as possible, as well as encouraging two-party solutions to address other American challenges – in addition to our daily efforts to change the incentives in the system to reduce the influence of the extreme voices in our politics.

On that last point: A silver lining of the Russian aggression is that Putin is inadvertently doing some of our work for us.  Just as NATO and much of the world has been united in response to the invasion, we see more cohesion and togetherness here at home, in Congress and around the country.  For now, the angry voices of both extremes are marginalized. We know that the bipartisan and bicameral cooperation we champion can fundamentally fix what ails our nation, just as it is central to our efforts to help Ukraine.

Let’s do our best together to make this unity stick in the weeks and months ahead.

Statement by No Labels National Co-chairs Governor Larry Hogan and Senator Joe Lieberman and No Labels Board Member Admiral Dennis Blair:

“For weeks, President Zelensky and the people of Ukraine have shown remarkable determination and courage in the face of Putin’s unprovoked war of choice. But wars cannot be won on heroics alone. Although America has already delivered significant military aid to Ukraine, we can and must do much more. We join the Problem Solvers Caucus in urging President Biden and Congress to provide or facilitate delivery of vital additional military aid to Ukraine, including but not limited to S-300 surface-to-air missile system, MiG-29 jets, and Su-25 aircraft.

“The American people are unified in standing with the heroic Ukrainian people and against Russian aggression. We will not be intimidated by Putin’s barbaric attacks and threats. We must stand united with our allies in offering not just words and sanctions, but the additional weaponry Ukraine needs to prevail.”

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said this week that the U.S. will “defend every inch of NATO territory” if attacked by Russia — a sentiment President Biden has also shared, even while warning that “direct conflict between NATO and Russia [would be] World War III.”
