This election is about a lot of things, but most of all, it’s about our values: democracy, opportunity, equality, and patriotism. It’s about the values that we’re fighting for and Donald Trump is running against.

Today, on Independence Day, I’m asking you to recommit to fighting for those values that our leaders have abandoned.

That means committing ourselves, today and every day, to restoring strong American leadership and real patriotism.

Strong American leadership means our next president walking into the White House on January 20th, 2021 and sending a message to our troops that they will never again be put in harm’s way without a clear mission or a clear path home; a message to our allies that they can once again trust us; a message to our enemies that they can once again trust our resolve; and a message to the entire world that America’s back--and we are here to stay.

True patriotism is not hugging the flag and throwing military parades. True patriotism is what I saw in the men and women I served with in the Marines, and what we see across the country today in women marching for basic respect, students walking out for gun reform, and teachers striking for fair pay.

True patriotism is fighting to make sure the flag stands for something. That’s what’s on the ballot in 2020: our values, our country.

And we can win. But we have to do it together.

Because it’s when our country lets us down the most that we need to work the hardest. It’s when our values are under assault that we need to fight for them.

Thank you for fighting this fight with me. I hope you enjoy some downtime today and get a chance to reflect on what you’re fighting for in 2020.
