Dear John,
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear religious liberty?
If you’re like me, you think of religious freedom and make an immediate connection to the Constitution...because after all, it’s the first freedom in our nation’s founding document.
But did you know there are vast federal laws in addition to the First Amendment that safeguard our right to live our faith?
One such legal protection is the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA)—and this past weekend we observed the 26th anniversary since it was signed into law on November 16, 1993.
Let me briefly tell you why we celebrate the enactment of this law.
RFRA remains one of the foremost federal protections for you, me and people of all faiths when our rights come under attack. It’s a keystone law that makes sure the government won’t burden a person’s right to freely live out their faith.
What surprises many people is that RFRA was one of the most widely supported religious freedom bills in modern history.
The passage of RFRA showed us one of the starkest displays of bipartisanship in recent memory. A diverse coalition of over sixty liberal and conservative groups, politicians and advocates across the country joined forces to protect the free exercise of religion. In the end, federal RFRA legislation passed unanimously in the House of Representatives, by an overwhelming 97-3 vote in the Senate and was signed into law by Democratic President Bill Clinton.
Few questioned the necessity of RFRA two and a half decades ago—but today, the picture looks vastly different as RFRA is under impending threat.
As part of their all-out assault on faith, opponents of religious liberty are lobbying Congress right now to pass legislation that virtually guts RFRA.
Their efforts recently led to the House of Representatives passing a disastrous bill that nullifies RFRA’s religious freedom protections and creates intolerance and contempt against people of faith.
That’s why our expert legal team wants to help equip you and your family to understand RFRA, especially now that attacks on faith are at an all-time high.
