I’m dismayed by the GOP’s repeated attempts to undermine public education.

Greetings,

As Chair of the Senate Public Education Subcommittee—and more importantly, as an educator—I’ve been dismayed by the GOP’s repeated attempts to undermine public education. During this past legislative session alone, Republicans attempted (unsuccessfully) to pass the following harmful education bills:

  • SB20 would have eliminated protections for trans students in public schools
  • SB275 would have censored books and other materials in school libraries
  • SB570 would have banned “inherently divisive concepts” from being taught in classrooms (aka the “CRT Bill”)
  • SB766 would have discriminated against young trans athletes in schools
  • HB787 would have put restrictions on classroom discussions that would make it difficult to teach basic American history

These discriminatory bills never saw the light of day, because my Democratic colleagues and I killed them in committee. But we know the Republicans are never going to stop pushing their far-right agenda, which means we have to do everything we can to ensure the Democrats hold their one-seat Senate Majority.

Team, can you start by making a contribution to my re-election campaign? The GOP has already targeted my seat as a top priority for flipping back in the next election, which would be the only seat they need to regain complete control of Virginia’s government.

The bills listed above are just a quick preview of types of regressive, discriminatory legislation the GOP will force upon Virginia if they regain even a single seat in the Senate. We must not let that happen, team. Protect Virginia students from discrimination by donating to my re-election fund today.

Sincerely,

Sen. Ghazala Hashmi
Senate District 10
