Index on Censorship magazine marks its 50th birthday

This week is the 50th anniversary of the publication of the first issue of Index on Censorship magazine back in 1972. We marked the occasion at the Bishopsgate Institute in London, where our archives are held, and welcomed supporters including our publisher SAGE, partner organisations and members of staff for a slice of birthday cake. Guests were also treated to a discussion between Sir Trevor Phillips and Jonathan Dimbleby, present and past chairs of the organisation, and were given a first look at the 50th anniversary edition of the magazine. The new issue is out now and features new writing from Sir Tom Stoppard, Margaret Atwood and Ariel Dorfman, as well as letters sent by Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai from his prison cell.
