John -
Earlier this week, the Senate Banking Committee voted to advance the most diverse and climate conscious Board of Governors to the Federal Reserve. Jerome Powell, Lael Brainard, Philip Jefferson and Lisa Cook’s nominations were voted on in the committee. The vote for Lisa Cook was tied and will need to be taken up by the full Senate before a final confirmation vote.
What should have been an easy process for these experienced and well-qualified nominees turned into a circus1. Members of the committee played politics with the nominees to the central Bank of the United States as everyday people suffered the consequences of high inflation, the impacts of the growing climate crisis, and the economic fall-out from Covid.
Instead of moving forward and doing their jobs, senators like Pat Toomey and Joe Manchin caved to fossil fuel interests and forced the experienced leader Sarah Bloom Raskin to withdraw her nomination.
This will not stand. John, will you send a message to your senators today and demand they vote ‘yes’ on our slate of Federal Reserve nominees?
While some senators claim that these nominees are radical and are politicizing the Fed, they themselves are the ones who are radical, blocking highly qualified nominees, and caving to fossil fuel interests over everyday citizens’ well-being.
We need to send a strong message that fossil fuel interests won’t be accepted. In this time of growing economic and climate crises, we need a fully functioning Fed.
All four of the Fed nominees are well qualified for these positions and need to be confirmed as soon as possible so they can work to get the country’s economy back on track. John, write to your senators today and demand they confirm our Federal Reserve nominee slate as soon as possible - we can’t wait.
