My heart breaks for the people of Ukraine as we continue to witness the tragedy and violence inflicted by Vladamir Putin. Kids and mothers on stretchers. Attacks on innocent civilians trying to escape bombings. Just devastating.
I agree wholeheartedly with what President Zelensky told Congress this week: we must do more to stop Putin’s war.
I have been working on a few important steps we’re now taking to support Ukraine.
- First, through my work on the House Appropriations Committee, we are immediately sending almost $14 billion in humanitarian and defensive assistance to Ukraine. This will mean food, medicine, and energy supplies to help with the growing humanitarian and refugee crisis - along with new weapons, armor and equipment for the Ukrainian military to improve their defense capabilities.
- Second, we are hitting Putin and his Russian oligarchs where it hurts - their bank accounts. That means instituting severe sanctions on their wealth, seizing their yachts and foreign homes, and freezing their foreign bank accounts.
