I’ve been working for a long time trying to keep big tech from using their platforms to monopolize entire industries. So when I found out that Amazon appeared to be lying to Congress about its business practices – practices that allow it to outmaneuver and outperform smaller sellers on its platform – I was NOT happy.

I’m not about to let tech giants like Amazon pull a fast one on us and use their power and resources to destroy competition. Last week, I sent a letter to the Justice Department, asking them to look into it and hold Amazon accountable. But a letter to the DOJ is not enough. Congress has a responsibility to enact laws to stop these outrageous practices.

That’s why I introduced the American Choice and Online Innovation Act. When giant tech companies show us they won’t act in good faith, then we need to force them to play by the same rules as everyone else.

Small businesses and online sellers use Amazon to reach their customers. They shouldn’t have to worry that their data is being used by Amazon to determine how to edge them out of the market. We have a word for that: monopoly.
