John,
The cost of gas is skyrocketing across the U.S. and the blame game has already begun.
The truth is gas prices are high because fossil fuel executives have been artificially limiting supply. It’s a matter of corporations vs. communities.
Working-class Americans continue to suffer at the hands of corporate greed daily. 64% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to afford the rising cost of gas, food, rent and utilities. In some places, workers making minimum wage have to work 8 hours just to fill up their gas tank.
We need a Green New Deal to spur a massive transition to renewable energy. Transitioning to renewables is a long-term solution to the problem, not a short-sighted one like importing or drilling more oil.
This is a time sensitive issue. There will be no way out of this crisis if we don’t think ahead about what an energy transition can and should look like. Strengthening our relationships with petrostates and increasing our oil dependency would be a huge mistake.
It is time to seize this moment and put our money into renewables. We cannot do anything more to worsen the climate crisis or greater disasters and suffering will surely follow. Now more than ever, we need to mobilize every sector of our government and society to fight for a Green New Deal and create millions of good-paying, union jobs in the process.
President Biden has a choice, John. At this historic crossroads, the president’s decisions will have irreversible consequences. Biden has the opportunity to follow through on his promises and demonstrate international climate leadership.
If Biden chooses to side with fossil fuel executives who continue to capitalize on instability and war, there will be irreversible ramifications that will undermine any chance of him achieving his climate goals.
It’s time to mobilize our anger and fight back against corporate greed.
In solidarity,
Team Sunrise
