City Council to create ?living memorials? for those who lost their lives to Covid-19 in Nottingham
Covid-19 has taken an awful toll on our lives. I?m saddened that approaching 1,000 people have lost their lives in our city ? a tragic milestone. The anniversary of our first lockdown in 2020 feels like an appropriate time to look back, reflect and remember all of those people we have sadly lost to Covid in Nottingham. The City Council is therefore creating ?living memorials? to remember those who lost their lives to Covid-19 in Nottingham, with 1,000 trees to be planted across the city to represent the Nottingham residents who died during the pandemic.
A Covid Memorial Garden is to be created in Bulwell Forest, while a Covid Memorial Tree will be dedicated at a public event next Thursday at The Forest Recreation Ground ? site of Covid vaccinations and testing. Forget-me-not seeds will also be given to every primary school and made available free to the public from libraries to create an annual city-wide bloom. Remembrance activities will conclude with a public memorial service on the steps of the Council House on Saturday 2 April.
Covid is still present in our city and in the wider country and we must continue to take steps to live safely with the virus so this death toll doesn?t increase ? wearing face coverings in busy indoor spaces, taking tests and getting vaccinated all remain important actions against the virus.

Nottingham Stands with Ukraine
We are all appalled about the awful situation in Ukraine. Nottingham is a welcoming city with a large Ukrainian community and will always support those in need. Find out what we're doing and how you can help here [ [link removed] ].
Also, tomorrow (Saturday 19 March) a Ukraine Solidarity March is taking place starting from the Robin Hood Statue at 1.30pm, before heading into the city then ending at Old Market Square. The organisers, Nottingham Ukraine Solidarity Campaign, have arranged the march to raise awareness and show opposition to the ongoing war.?

Giant artwork in Nottingham unveiled by artist Small Kid
Giant artwork in Nottingham unveiled by artist Small Kid
If you haven?t already, I would encourage everyone to visit the fantastic new art mural in St Ann?s. The artwork, commissioned by Nottingham City Homes, surrounds the site of our new social housing development along Woodborough Road. It was created by artist SMALL KID and designed by children at Huntingdon Primary School and residents at High Cross Leys Housing scheme, with the support of local ward councillors.
This artwork, which is one of the biggest of its kind in the city, has added a real burst of colour in St Ann?s and locals have told us it looks great. Find out more [ [link removed] ].

Showcasing Nottingham?s transport infrastructure
It was great to see Nottingham showcased on Channel 5?s The Gadget Show on Wednesday night. For those that missed it ? Ortis, along with Cat Dixon and Raz Marsden cycled some innovative bikes along the Victoria Embankment and braved a steep hill in Gedling to really put them to the test.
Since we closed Victoria Embankment to through traffic last year, it?s created a safer and more pleasant space to walk and cycle and it?s fantastic to see it as a backdrop for cycling on a national stage. As the weather improves, I?m sure more people in Nottingham will be able to enjoy safe, active travel along this green stretch of the river.

Showcasing Nottingham?s transport infrastructure
I was also pleased to showcase Nottingham?s innovative traffic and transport solutions to the Mayor of Kyrenia in Cyprus and other members of the Municipality when they visited this week. They were clearly impressed with our strategic approach to transport, our public transport network and parking policies, and enjoyed a trip to the new Broadmarsh car park, a ride on the tram and on the Medilink electric bus.

Clean Champions
Keeping Nottingham clean and a nice place to live, work and visit is a key priority for the council. Every year we have a Big Spring Clean where various council services, ward councillors, our wonderful clean champions and other volunteers roll up our sleeves and take targeted action to tackle litter and grot spots across the city.
Ahead of the Nottingham Big Spring Clean, we?d like to get your views on keeping the city clean in our short online survey Nottingham Big Spring Clean Survey [ [link removed] ] also as always please do free to contact me personally at

Happy Holi
This week, Nottingham?s Hindu community celebrate Holi without Covid restrictions for the first time in two years.
As we hope for a brighter future out of the shadow of Covid, I want to wish everyone in Nottingham a happy and joyous Holi.
