Strengthening Indiana's Elections |
Chairman Kyle Hupfer speaks during the election integrity panel at the 2022 Congress of Counties in French Lick, Ind. |
Earlier this week, in another win for Hoosiers, Gov. Holcomb signed HEA 1116 into law, an election integrity bill championed by Secretary of State Holli Sullivan that will strengthen Indiana's elections.
With over 250,000 online applications for absentee ballots during the 2020 election cycle, this bill will now require voters to submit their driver's license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number when requesting an absentee ballot electronically, adding a vital security enhancement to the process. Moreover, the bill will also require voter-verifiable paper trails before the 2024 election cycle, boosting voter confidence and increasing the efficiency of post-election audits.
This is only the latest development in a long line of Republican-led election security measures.
Earlier this month, the Center for Election Integrity at the America First Policy Institute launched a color-coded interactive map that ranks states on their election integrity laws, including photo ID requirements, strong laws against ballot harvesting, and ballots returned to election officials by election day. Indiana received a green, top-tier ranking, meaning our laws better protect voters at the ballot box; HEA 1116 will only bolster those protections.

Launching Foam Collection Plan to Protect Firefighters, Environment |
|
|
On Wednesday, Gov. Holcomb announced the next steps in a new program to collect and dispose of hazardous firefighting foam that contains PFAS, a known contaminant. “Indiana has chosen to be a leader in this PFAS foam program, because, frankly, firefighting is hard enough without having to worry about these hazardous chemicals,” Gov. Holcomb said.
“We hope more departments will sign up so we can do all we can to protect Indiana firefighters.” About 200 fire departments have already signed on to participate and have identified about 50,000 gallons of the foam that will be safely disposed of at no cost to the department. Indiana's Unemployment Rate Continues
Record Decline
|
"Republican leadership works" — that's the message the state unemployment figures revealed on Monday. Indiana’s unemployment rate fell to 2.4% in January, down from 2.7% the previous month, a record low for the state that dates back to 1976 when the current method for calculating unemployment rates began.
“With a 2.4% unemployment rate in January, even lower than the previous month, Indiana continues to outperform the nation as a whole. The low unemployment rate coincides with significant year-over-year job growth indicating that Indiana is trending in the right direction," noted Indiana Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Fred Payne. OF NOTE: 15 of the top 20 states for jobs recovered since the COVID-19 pandemic are led by Republicans (Indiana ranks 13th) and 17 of the top 20 states with the lowest unemployment rates are led by Republicans (Indiana ranks 3rd). |
