Follow on Social ‌ ‌ ‌ President's Message Asthma is a common chronic illness among children in the U.S., with a disproportionate impact among racial and ethnic minorities. A recent study from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute looked at two different approaches to managing mild persistent asthma in children and teens. However, daily asthma control medications are often under-prescribed and underused. Studies have found the use of daily ICS to be particularly low among African-American children, who carry a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality from asthma. There is helpful information about Evidence Updates: Choosing the Best Option for Managing Mild Persistent Asthma in Children for your parent community here. More information and resources can be found here specific to school nurses and other clinicians. Linda Mendonça, DNP, RN, PHNA-BC, NCSN, FNASN NASN President BETTER HEALTH. Know Your COVID-19 Community Level COVID-19 Community Levels is a new tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high. Hospital beds in use, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area will determine community levels. School nurses can use the map of the U.S. by county to track the community level of transmission for your school(s), which is updated weekly. Prioritizing Case Investigation and Contact Tracing New guidance for state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) health departments includes the advice that universal case investigation and contact tracing are not recommended for COVID-19. Health department jurisdictions should prioritize specific settings and groups at increased risk. STLT health departments may still provide technical assistance and support to K-12 schools and districts that choose to continue with case investigation and contact tracing, particularly if they are implementing test to stay (TTS) strategies. CDC guidance for K-12 Schools, Early Childhood Education, and Higher Education is coming soon. NASN2022 Key Details View the schedule. See the Health and Safety Protocols. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Using the WSCC Model to Implement Wellness Policies and Sustain Chronic Health Condition Management in Schools School nurse involvement when school wellness policies are developed is critical to ensure the overall health and well-being of students are addressed – beyond nutrition and physical activity. The ‘gold standard’ model school wellness policy developed by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation was updated in June 2020. This course offers information on the updated model wellness policy that now includes recommended language to address all 10 components of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model and the new (2020) NASN supplemental language to address chronic health condition management – positioning the school nurse to be able to fully participate when schools review and refresh current school wellness policies. This section of the Blueprint provides strategies and concrete examples to help school nurses, schools, pediatric health clinicians and other community partners work together toward youth suicide prevention efforts. The ideas outlined in this section of the Blueprint are intended to work within large-scale comprehensive approaches to suicide prevention, including those outlined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Suicide Prevention Resource Center.
