Data & Resources about Summer Camp

Independent, responsible, collaborative, empathic, willing to try new things. These are a few of the characteristics that we consistently hear parents and educators say students need to develop on their way to adulthood. We know from the research that social and emotional skills are linked to academic, career, relationship success, and overall well-being for all young people, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

Camp is an excellent learning environment that can provide kids with rich opportunities to develop the social and emotional skills we know they need. Perhaps most importantly, more than 95% of kids in our own
2019 study ([link removed]) said that camp is FUN! Don't miss our new blog post ([link removed]) on the subject.

We hope you enjoy this camp-focused newsletter as we explore some of the research and personal stories about the benefits of camp.

Warmly,
The Challenge Success Team

THE POWER OF CAMP
“During just one day, campers might learn collaboration skills by working as a group to create a skit for campfire, build teamwork skills as they figure out what they need to do to win the cleanest cabin award, gain courage and learn perseverance by working through their fear of heights at the ropes course, or practice resilience by falling off and getting back up while learning to paddle board.“

DOING CAMP: WHAT TODAY'S KIDS NEED FROM THE EXPERIENCE
“At the camp level you have this incredible freedom to teach these (social and emotional) skills — adaptability, flexibility, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving — in a way that you’re not evaluating your campers, giving them a grade, and creating a transcript that’s going to go with them for life. You’re doing it in a really informal learning environment that gives you the freedom to make it not just fun and enjoyable — which we think it should be at school too — but to do it in a way that kids can learn without fear and worry. They don’t even know they’re learning. That’s the beauty of it.”
