John, Arizona is a nationwide leader when it comes to voting by mail. Since 1991, voters in the Grand Canyon State have had the option to request an absentee ballot without an excuse, as well as join the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) for added convenience. Ninety percent of Arizona voters use the vote-by-mail system, and it is so thorough that voters can check the status of their early ballot online. But voting by mail is now in jeopardy in Arizona. After several attempts to restrict voting rights and decertify and audit the results of the 2020 election, the Arizona Republican Party has asked the state supreme court to throw out the vote-by-mail system altogether. Despite its 31-year track record, GOP legislators argue that the system is unconstitutional. “In-person voting at the polls on a fixed date (election day) is the only constitutional manner of voting in Arizona,” attorneys for the state’s GOP wrote in a petition to the state supreme court. They are citing a provision in the Arizona Constitution that says "electors may express at the polls their approval or disapproval of (a) measure,” arguing that "at the polls" means votes must be cast in person. This is a bold and blatant attack on voting rights for all Arizona voters, and it must be stopped. Sign the petition: Stop the attack on voting rights. Arguments that the 2020 election was stolen have been disproven time and time again. Yet attempts to suppress the vote have been widespread since then, threatening the bedrock of our democracy. These efforts violate the First, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution, as well as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Free Speech For People remains committed to protecting a democracy that provides every American with an equal voice and an equal vote. We have filed lawsuits in Arizona and Texas contesting laws that severely restrict voting rights, particularly among traditionally marginalized communities of color. While Congress fails to protect our most basic democratic rights, we must do everything in our power to block these laws in court. Sign if you agree: Congress must act to protect voting rights nationwide. In solidarity, Free Speech For People |
