Hi John, it’s Jessica.
This past week, I made a pit stop at SXSW’s “Immigration: The Real Story” session in Austin for a discussion about immigration and the border.
During this session, I talked a lot about my own experiences growing up on the border as the daughter of Mexican American immigrants and as an immigration and human rights attorney.
You see, growing up in Laredo, I saw first-hand that the rules of this country weren’t written for everyone. My experience — along with the struggles of my family and neighbors — are what inspired me to become an immigration and human rights attorney in the first place: so I can protect the rights of immigrants.
Conservative politicians like Henry Cuellar have turned their backs on immigrants and created a false narrative that paints them as the problem. While Donald Trump was in office, Cuellar voted to fund his border wall twice and was the only Democrat to support extending the amount of time immigrant children could be detained at the border.
Here’s the reality: folks who come to the United States are not what’s causing a crisis — the crisis itself is how we’re handling these human lives. It’s time that we bring in new representation to South Texas who will treat our country’s immigration system with compassion and love. And once I’m elected to Congress, that’s exactly what I intend to do.
So if you’re with me, will you make a small contribution today to my campaign? The runoff election is just 2 months away, so it’s important that I get all the support I can from grassroots supporters like you.

I’m running for Congress to create a pathway to citizenship for our undocumented people, revamping the visa system, strengthening family reunification, and creating a humane border and immigration policy by scrapping disastrous laws like the 1996 Immigration Act that lays the groundwork for the massive deportations that we’re seeing today.
We defied expectations in the Democratic primary when we came within just a small margin of defeating Henry Cuellar, despite being outspent by hundreds of thousands of dollars. And together, we are going to prove that a people-powered campaign like ours can take on a far-right Democratic incumbent and win the runoff election on May 24th.
Our campaign needs all the help we can get between now and the next 2 months to bring it home — will you contribute any amount you can afford to give today to help me win?
