Dear Friend, As we write, more than 150,000 families in Brazil are at imminent risk of losing their homes. Brazil’s rural elites, private militias, and big landlords are looking ahead to March 31st, 2022. That’s when the pandemic moratorium on evictions will expire in Brazil. In a few short weeks, thousands of families, from the rural landless to the urban poor, could be violently thrown out of their homes — unless we join together and take action. The Landless Workers Movement (MST) has identified 200 encampments and pre-settlement areas where entire communities are threatened with eviction orders. Afro-descendant Quilombolas, Indigenous Peoples, and urban tenants are also in the crosshairs. The right-wing Bolsonaro government’s decision to end the eviction moratorium is extra cruel given the MST’s work. During the pandemic, the MST has provided more than 6,000 tons of food to those at risk of hunger. This is food produced agroecologically on MST settlements — the very settlements under threat now. Beyond its work within Brazil, the MST has inspired movements across the globe, and with its strong spirit of internationalism, it has sent volunteers to many parts of the world. Today, the MST needs global solidarity. While the MST is up against an authoritarian government, rural elites, and powerful financial actors, we have something greater — our unity and solidarity in struggle. Over the pandemic, international pressure has already been key in reversing certain evictions — like when we joined together to beat back the eviction of the Luiz Beltrame de Castro settlement. For the next couple weeks, Grassroots International, Friends of the MST, and other international allies are joining with the MST to fight for zero evictions. Be part of the movement by taking action today. |
