Team —
The Republican party has been waging an all-out attack on reproductive rights for decades.
But now, their efforts have pushed Roe v. Wade to the precipice of being overturned.
The Supreme Court, which is occupied by a conservative majority, will release its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health in June. This decision, when rendered by the Court, has the potential to overturn Roe nationwide. In many states, abortion as we know it will become illegal.
We cannot go back to a pre-Roe reality, team.
So here’s what we can do.
Right now, 21 states have laws that could be used to restrict the legal status of abortion.
On the other hand, 15 states plus the District of Columbia have laws in place that protect the legal right to abortion. Three of these states (New Jersey, Oregon, and Vermont) and Washington, D.C. have codified the right to abortion throughout pregnancy without state interference, and 12 explicitly permit abortion prior to viability or when necessary to protect the life or health of the pregnant person.
Codifying Roe vs. Wade is the path forward.
But team, we cannot count on every state in the Union to take this step on its own. Republican voter suppression, gerrymandering, and more essentially guarantees Republican control in states where people will still need access to abortion, regardless of their representatives’ political affiliation.
Congress must take up the call to codify Roe.
If you are able, please consider a contribution to help reelect pro-choice leaders like Eric to lead this charge in Congress.
Together, we can save the right to abortion.
