María Taant was a Shuar woman who fought tirelessly in defense of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest and for Indigenous women's rights. She went up against mining companies looking to exploit her community's lands in the name of profit and advocated for a healthy environment for her people.
On March 26, 2021, María was run over by a car on her way home from an event where she was receiving recognition for her work with Mujeres Amazónicas, a collective of women defenders of the rainforest.
It has been nearly a year since her death, and neither the Prosecutor's Office nor the Ombudsman's office have carried out an investigation. Join us and Mujeres Amazónicas in demanding the Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office of Morona Santiago in Ecuador carry out a transparent and efficient investigation while the Ombudsman's office monitors the case.
We're very close to reaching 30K+ signatures, which will be hand delivered soon. Make sure you take part in demanding justice for Indigneous women Earth Defenders in the Amazon!
