The U.S. Senate failed to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would have federally protected abortion access.

This is a huge setback, John. Until Congress acts to federally codify Roe v. Wade, red states like Texas will continue to use loopholes to pass restrictive abortion bans – which will result in forced pregnancies and increased economic inequality.

Sign our petition demanding that Congress protect reproductive freedom.

When lawmakers and judges outlaw abortion, they immediately erase a wide array of options for the estimated 1 in 4 women who have an abortion in their lifetime. As Caitlin Myers, an economics professor at Middlebury College, wrote in The Washington Post, "Access to abortion has been found to increase women's educational attainment, labor force participation, entrance into professional occupations and earnings, and to decrease financial stress and poverty for women and their families."

Likewise, the data shows that bans on abortion increase economic misery. Myers cites a study which found that women who were denied access to abortion clinics through state and local regulations, such as Texas' six-week ban, experienced an increase in "bankruptcies, evictions, and court judgments" compared to women who were provided abortions.

The same leaders who enforce such bans deny financial support for the women their laws hurt, leaving women – and future generations of Americans – in ever-worsening cycles of poverty and exclusion for decades to come.

That’s why we’re demanding that Congress take federal action to codify Roe v. Wade, before it’s too late. Please, will you sign our petition to protect reproductive rights?
