Sexual and reproductive rights are under attack in Texas. First, abortion rights. Now, trans and nonbinary children's rights.
The Texas Governor recently ordered state officials to investigate parents for child abuse if their children are receiving gender-affirming care. This order targets trans and nonbinary children and their families for accessing the health care they need and deserve.
Last Friday, a judge temporarily blocked the directive and stopped the state from opening investigations into parents. But this relief may not last long: The state's attorney general said he plans to take it to the Texas Supreme Court.
Hospitals and health centers have already started halting gender-affirming care, like suspending prescription refills, for fear of legal retaliation. Politicians are intentionally disrupting the lives of children and their families, and harming their mental health in the process.
Luckily, organizations specializing in the mental, physical, and financial welfare of LGBTQ+ children and their families have been on the ground in Texas for years.
Donate now to these incredible organizations to protect and support trans and nonbinary youth. Your gift will be split among all three organizations:
When the rights of one group of people are diminished, we're all at risk. The fights for LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive rights are linked. Planned Parenthood is committed to building a world where everyone can live free from discrimination.
Remember, Texas was the first state to enact a six-week abortion ban, S.B. 8, that encourages private citizens to sue people they believe have helped someone get an abortion in the state after that time.
In the six months that S.B. 8 has been in effect, we've seen several states advancing similar bills — ranging from 30-day bans, six-week bans, 15-week bans, and total bans with no protections for rape or incest or fining people like rideshare drivers simply for transporting a patient to an abortion provider.
Extreme abortion bans… terrifying attacks on the mental and physical well-being of trans and nonbinary youth… it's all so unconscionable.
If S.B. 8's consequences have taught us anything, it's that Texas is now providing the legal groundwork for other states to adopt similarly dangerous laws, whether they target people seeking abortions, trans and nonbinary youth, or others in vulnerable positions.
Supporting local organizations like Fiesta Youth South Texas Equality Project (aka STEP), Out Youth, and Transgender Education Network of Texas is a great way to provide the most direct help now.
These organizations have been protecting and supporting LGBTQ+ youth for years. And in this precious time of need, they could use all the help they can get.
When we protect the right to abortion, the right to gender-affirming health care, the right to love who we love, the right to be who we are — we're protecting our future leaders, activists, and advocates. We're protecting children. We're protecting our future.
Donate now to support trans and nonbinary youth in Texas.
