Hi John,
Alexandra Hunt is running for Congress in Pennsylvania. Her candidacy has taken the nation by storm as she challenges our idea of a “conventional” candidate and the narrative around sex work.
She recently caught our attention when she revealed something many female candidates experience, but very few share publicly: she has received an onslaught of sexist and hateful messages – including a death threat – from total strangers.
She sent an email to her supporters that actually included many of the messages she’s received. She spoke of people harping on her relationship status, saying she is “hurting her chances" of finding a husband one day, and then even listed some of the actual vitriol she had received just that week:
-
You sound like a lesbian you f**king c*nt.
-
Alexandra out here trying to make the cliche "our politicians are prostitutes" literal. The last thing we need in Philadelphia is more trashy, used single women wielding power over her betters.
-
I'd read her fashion blog, that's all a pretty face and sh*t for brains is qualified for.
-
Hopelessly broken.
-
A future elderly cat woman.
-
What's her relationship like with her father?
-
I bet she bangs for votes.
-
Do you sleep with the people who give your campaign money?
-
Let's be honest, she's running for Congress because she's flat.
-
Certain amendments were a mistake.
When men announce they are running for office, they are simply not subjected to this kind of response – even men with troubling and dangerous past behaviors. In fact, men with past allegations of sexual assault and harassment, domestic violence, or white-collar crime have been known to get elected to office pretty easily. Let’s not forget we’ve even had a previous president with (many) rape allegations.
Female candidates need our support. They are subjected to so many more obstacles and so much more abuse than their male counterparts. It makes running for office as a woman exhausting, disheartening, and downright terrifying. Alexandra Hunt is far from alone in her experiences. We cannot afford to continue letting exceptional female candidates get left behind.
This is why Her Bold Move exists.
Last week, we rolled out our first wave of endorsements for 2022. We are thrilled to support these incredible, progressive women as they seek to shatter glass ceilings across the nation. But we need your help to hit our March fundraising goal so we can provide support to this incredible roster of candidates, and help them win in November. Please pitch in $10 to our Endorsement Fund immediately.
