TPS for Afghans a Positive Step, Not a Permanent Solution 

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today the Biden administration announced Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans already in the United States. 

The status allows evacuees and other Afghans in the U.S. to live and work legally in the U.S. for 18 months, with the potential for renewal. Like humanitarian parole, which many Afghan evacuees have, TPS is temporary. An Afghan Adjustment Act is essential to ensure that Afghan evacuees can receive permanent status. 

"TPS is a positive step for supporting and protecting Afghans in the U.S., but it’s far from a permanent solution," said Ali Noorani, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum. "Congress needs to pass an Afghan Adjustment Act to provide stability and certainty for resettled Afghans. We should not rely solely on temporary measures for our Afghan allies who are rebuilding their lives."
