Dear Colleague,

The U.S. electricity grid is facing a perfect storm. The push to rapidly decarbonize the U.S. economy is amplifying our reliance on the grid just as it is coming under unprecedented strain from more frequent and prolonged extreme weather events.

A new Council report, entitled “Achieving Grid Reliability and Decarbonization through Carbon Pricing,” makes the case that an economy-wide carbon fee is key for maintaining access to affordable and reliable electricity as we transition to a low-carbon future.

The report’s authors, former FERC Chairman Neil Chatterjee and Council CEO Greg Bertelsen, discussed its findings at a virtual event earlier today. Following the briefing, Senator John Hickenlooper (D-CO) offered a view from Congress, and Vistra Corp. CEO Curt Morgan shared his perspective on how to strengthen the grid.

We invite you to read the report and listen to a recording of the event

All the best,
