Dear People For Supporter,
The Russian regime’s brutal assault on Ukraine in recent weeks has brought to the forefront the global struggle of authoritarianism versus the pluralistic and democratic values that we as Americans know and cherish.
Unfortunately, much of America’s Far Right movement has thrown their lot in with the authoritarians.
Like Sen. Josh Hawley, Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Madison Cawthorn, and other pro-Trump extremists in Congress, they cheered the insurrectionists as they stormed the U.S. Capitol Building last year attempting to violently overturn the results of a free and fair election.
And like Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson, they have nothing but praise for autocrats like Putin – to the extent that the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) even sponsored an official conference in Hungary in support of Viktor Orban, the strongman ruler who has virtually destroyed democracy in that country.
And like dictators all around the world, America’s Far Right is actively trying to rig elections and restrict voting rights, attack immigrants, demonize the free press, attack LGBTQ+ rights, pack our courts with highly partisan extremist judges, and discredit the very idea of democracy itself.
It’s easy, of course, to think that America could never go down the path of authoritarianism. Unfortunately, though, there are some very troubling signs leading into this fall’s midterm elections.
The Freedom House 2022 report – which tracks the status of freedom and democracy in countries around the world – recently reported that the United States “...has fallen below its traditional peers on key democratic indicators, including [presidential] elections, freedom from improper political influence, and equal treatment of minority groups.”
And you’ve seen the signs yourself, such as the dozens of voter suppression bills that have been passed in multiple Republican-controlled states, new restrictions on reproductive freedom in states like Missouri, book banning in Tennessee, the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida, or the attacks on transgender youth and their parents in Texas.
This trend is very disturbing, but it can – and must – be stopped.
People For is all-in on the fight for democracy, freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all. We document, expose and disrupt far-right extremism at all levels in American politics. We fight hard for voting rights – and we’re firmly committed to defending and expanding pro-voting-rights majorities in both houses of Congress in this fall’s elections.
So if you have the capacity, please give generously today. This is a fight we are ready to have, and win – but we can’t do that without financial contributions from grassroots supporters like you.
