"My race is the most competitive House race in Michigan, and one of the most competitive in the entire country." - Rep. Elissa Slotkin

Friend,

Let me re-introduce myself: I'm Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin. I currently represent Michigan's 8th District, one of only seven seats in the entire U.S. House that voted for Donald Trump for President AND a Democrat for the House. I'm running to represent the newly drawn 7th District, now more rural and 3,000 square miles, for my third term in Congress.

My race is the most competitive House race in Michigan, and one of the most competitive in the entire country. As a result, I'm a top target for national Republicans.

But, I’m still pretty new to politics. I've spent my life in public service. After 9/11, I dedicated my career to national security. I served at the CIA, the White House, and the Pentagon under presidents of both parties – while also serving three tours in Iraq alongside our military. I decided to run for Congress in 2017 after watching my then-Congressman vote to gut the Affordable Care Act.

Healthcare is a deeply personal issue for me. When my mother was diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer in 2009, she couldn’t afford health insurance due to her pre-existing condition. So when the U.S. House voted to cut protections for people with pre-existing conditions and held a big party to celebrate at the White House, something inside me broke. I said, "No. You don't get to do this. You don't get to ignore your constituents, vote against their interests, and keep your job." I flipped the seat in 2018 and won it again in 2020 – an election where my district also voted for Donald Trump.

Now, as we head into an election season with a razor-thin Democratic majority in the House, I've got my work cut out for me.

In 2018, Republican groups spent over $7 million against me and my campaign, and this time around, it's only going to be worse as the other side hurls baseless attack ads, again and again. I'm the only Democrat still left in the House who won a seat that went for Romney in 2012, Trump in 2016, and Trump again in 2020. And my new seat is a lot bigger and a lot more rural.

This is all to say, the path to keeping the House runs directly through my new district. That’s why I’m showing up in your email today. I would be so grateful if you considered splitting a contribution between my campaign and Debbie Stabenow to help me and other candidates across the country keep the House blue in 2022.
