The Fresno County Democratic Party mourns the passing of David Cardenas, mayor of Fowler and longtime pillar of his community. Cardenas served as Fowler’s mayor for 12 years and was on the City Council for 21 years. Cardenas also chaired the Fresno Council of Governments.

Despite his long tenure in elected office, it was his contributions to the community as an individual that stood out and made him so beloved. He was personable and an individual of unmatched integrity. He was the epitome of what it means to be a civil servant.

During his time as mayor, he walked door to door to promote free virtual preschool starting back in 2019. He continuously reached out for public opinion on how best to direct Measure C transportation money in our region.

As a man of faith, he was deeply involved in St. Lucy’s Catholic Church, spearheading the construction of the grotto to Our Lady of Guadalupe. He owned Dave’s Auto Service, and everyone knew that he would go above and beyond for every customer.

The Central Valley will miss his kindness and dedication.

The Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine signals a new age of military empires. During the previous decades of relative peace, in the absence of successful wars for territorial expansion, we progressives have refocused on the effects of economic imperialism. We forgot what the last age of true empires was like, and we went blind to how easily it could return.

Vladimir Putin sees himself as an emperor, heir to the Russian legacy of Stalin and the tsars of old. Other conservative authoritarians across the globe are watching this conflict to see how much resistance the democratic world puts up against this attempted conquest.

The annexation of Crimea was this century’s Sudetenland, where Nazi Germany was permitted to annex strategically important land from Czechoslovakia under the pretense of protecting an oppressed ethnic German majority. Now, after losing Crimea, Ukraine lost a defensible water border and is fighting two additional armies that spilled out from the peninsula to overrun most of Ukraine’s coastline.

Many people across the world thought Putin’s threats against the rest of Ukraine were empty posturing, but President Biden has walked the tightrope of this crisis with admirable skill. He has transformed the United States’ well-known weakness at keeping secrets into an operational strategy that makes “leaks” a tool of precision statecraft.

The Democratic administration has rebuilt international ties badly damaged by Trump’s petty antagonism and incompetent flailing, assembling a sanction regime that clearly astonished the autocratic world with its speed and unity.

Now we must hold strong to show the would-be emperors that we are willing to endure and stand strong against those who wish bring death and destruction to stretch their lines on the map.

When Devin Nunes resigned his position in the House of Representatives before his elected term was over, he created an unusual circumstance. While Nunes abandoned his constituents to run Donald Trump’s new media company, California is paying for a special election to choose who will hold the seat until next January.

The replacement is further complicated by the outcome of statewide redistricting, which means this House district will not exist by next year.

The election date is April 5, but vote-by-mail ballots are already out to all registered voters of this soon-to-be partitioned Congressional district.

There are two Democrats running in this special election against three Republicans. The Democratic Party has not endorsed in this race. If no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will face off again in June.

Eric Garcia (ericgarciaforcongress.com) is a Marine veteran working on his master’s in marriage and family therapy. He has placed healthcare at the center of his campaign priorities and is a strong supporter of universal healthcare. He seeks federal funding for transportation, water and energy projects in underserved communities like those in the 22nd district.

Lourin Hubbard (www.lourinhubbard.com ([link removed]) ) is the operations manager for the Regional Water Quality Control Board. He believes industrial agricultural interests have received far too many advantages at a great cost to small family farms. He says that an end to sweetheart tax breaks for giant producers will foster more competition and improve the health of the Valley’s economy and residents.

The Republicans in this lot are the sort you would expect to flock into Nunes’ shadow. Matt Stoll vows to fight “dangerous progressive policies.” Connie Conway brags about being a Trump appointee. The always outrageous Elizabeth Heng has slid over from the neighboring district after losing to Rep. Jim Costa in a previous election.

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors recently turned down a $175,000 grant that would have helped the county assess how our worsening environment is impacting the health of our county’s vulnerable urban and rural populations. This money, requested by the public health director, David Luchini, would have helped develop projects to lessen the impact of heat, wildfire smoke and other climate-driven problems in local rural communities.

The move to deny the county this money was led by Supervisor Steve Brandau, and Supervisor Nathan Magsig cited conspiracy language with accusations of “sketchy resumes” among the researchers and a concern that the findings would not align with the desires of the agricultural industry.

Magsig is likely right about the findings given that the last two centuries of explosive growth in marginal land farming and residential communities in fire zones have set our state on a collision trajectory with the realities of our damaged planet.

California, particularly in agriculture and industry, has expanded its water consumption beyond what resources our state has. The deficit is made up by pumping, which is just another reserve we are running out of.

Each decade, less rain falls and so the cruel equations mean we cannot maintain our current practices. Our state’s culture of private water use also needs to change, with the luxury landscapes of green lawns and swimming pools exposed for the destructive wastes they are, but the water use of agriculture and other industry absolutely dwarfs residential use.

To adapt with minimal pain, we need to let science, not business or conspiracy theories, lead the way.

We cannot hide from climate change. We cannot avoid the suffering it will bring. But if we do the hard work to make intelligent sacrifices we can limit that suffering and help millions upon millions of us and of those yet to be born.
