DSA-LA’s Candidate Forum – Saturday, March 19!

Saturday, March 19 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

DSA-LA is now considering two additional candidates for the chapter’s endorsement in the 2022 primary election: Shervin Aazami for Congress and David Kim for Congress.

The Candidate Forum will begin with introductions from and open Q&A with the candidates. Following the Q&A, we will take a short break before transitioning to a closed deliberation session of the DSA-LA Membership. In the closed session, the Electoral Committee will present summary briefings on the races and districts, make a recommendation on endorsement, and DSA-LA members in good standing will debate reasons for or against supporting these candidates. All members will receive a ballot for consideration of the two candidate endorsements following the forum.

Immigration Justice Committee March Meeting!

TODAY! Tuesday, March 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

What’s the ol’ saying? March comes in like the international breakdown of American hegemony and goes out like the deepening contradictions of late-stage capitalism? It’s something like that, right? But while things may be dark on the global level, on the local level, there’s a lot of optimism to go around!

This month, we’re going to meet IN PERSON once again at the Highland Park Brewery in Chinatown (1220 N. Spring St., Los Angeles)*. Have a drink, some tater tots or maybe a fancy salad, and learn HOW TO POWER MAP and also discuss how to integrate into the wider immigrant rights struggle in LA!

*There’s free street parking nearby and we will be in the outdoor patio area. Proof of vaccination is required of all guests 12 and over for entry into the brewery.

Mutual Aid Book Club: Stone Butch Blues Pt. 2

TODAY! Tuesday, March 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

[CONTENT WARNING]

This session will touch on themes of the oppression and violence queer women, transgender people, nonbinary people, and people of color face under patriarchal society.

Mutual Aid is graduating to book three in our four book series on Alienation Under Capitalism. Stone Butch Blues, Leslie Feinberg’s 1993 first novel, is widely considered in and outside the U.S. to be a groundbreaking work about the complexities of gender. Feinberg was the first theorist to advance a Marxist concept of “transgender liberation.” Sold by the hundreds of thousands of copies and also passed from hand-to-hand inside prisons.

This first of five sessions will cover chapters 7-11. Reading is not required for participation however you can download a free copy of Feinberg’s Book here: https://www.lesliefeinberg.net/

Please RSVP to this event to get connection information.

The Mutual Aid Book Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

DSA-LA Nonprofit Workers Circle March Meeting

Sunday, March 20 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Hey nonprofit comrades! Come join us for an outdoor park comrade social on Sunday March 20th for the monthly meeting of the DSA-LA Nonprofit Workers Circle. As always, misery loves company. We hope to provide you a confidential, workers-first space to organize and challenge the nonprofit industrial complex.

This March, we will provide a relaxed, picnic-style social to meet fellow nonprofit comrades.

Bring your own snacks, beverage, and blanket. We’ll set up social distance style with face masks to protect one another and our loved ones while we’re still in this pandemic.

Get ready to live into “rest is revolutionary” collective practices.

RSVP today! As the event gets closer, we will send all registered participants a map of where we’ll meet in the park. Please let us know what you need to do to be present (have your kids join us in the background, allergy-free snacks, etc.). We will support you in meeting your accommodations.

If you have any questions, email us at [email protected] with the subject line “Nonprofit Workers Circle.”
