John,

Over the past two weeks we’ve been driving up and down Illinois’s 17th Congressional District, one of the largest congressional districts in America, to collect the signatures we needed to get on the ballot.

On Monday we dropped off our petitions and I’m proud to announce that we collected enough signatures to make the ballot!

Like many good things though, we had to pay for it. When we totaled up our receipts, myself, and the dozens of volunteers who we had petitioning across the massive rural district, racked up over $2279.83 in gas receipts over the past three weeks. Here’s where prices are at in one of the largest cities in our district, Rockford, Illinois:

Soaring gas prices hit rural districts like IL-17 the hardest. For many in our district, and across rural Illinois, it can take as long as an hour to an hour and a half to drive to the grocery store and back. When you have no choice but to do commutes like that, it adds up.

When I am elected to Congress I will fight to make sure that my constituents aren’t losing their paychecks at the pumps.

Here are some of the steps that I will take to address gas prices:

  • Temporarily banning the federal gas tax could save around 22% per gallon.
  • Giving regulators more teeth to fight price gouging levied upon consumers
  • Incentivize the switch to electric energy which will play a role in decreasing our oil dependency on nations like Saudi Arabia and Russia
  • Opening up more reserves to increase supply.
  • Temporarily waiving summer gas blends — which evaporate less quickly — could save up to $.15 per gallon.

These new prices must not become the new status quo and I will fight tooth and nail to bring these costs down.

Rural Illinoisans work too hard to take such a heavy hit at the pumps. The working people of IL-17 need a fighter and that fighter is Jackie McGowan. Will you please consider making a donation of whatever you can spare to help us hold on this critical seat this November?

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Your contribution will support our efforts to hold this toss-up seat, hold on to our razor thin majority, and bring back fair gas prices for working Illinoisans.

Yours truly,

Jackie McGowan
