Hi John, Last week, I had the privilege of visiting Afghanistan, where Save the Children Action Network's sister organization Save the Children has been working since 1976. Decades of conflict and an ongoing humanitarian crisis have made the situation on the ground there incredibly difficult. In the face of such immense need, the U.S. government has made a clear commitment to support humanitarian programs for children and their families. And I’m deeply grateful to report that this support is making a difference. Along my journey, I visited a school for young girls. All of the challenges the country has been facing have made it difficult for students – particularly girls – to access an education. But today, excited voices fill the classroom once again. I loved seeing how engaged and curious the students are. Many want to be teachers or doctors when they grow up. I sincerely hope we can help them achieve those dreams. John, will you share this message of hope with President Biden and your members of Congress and urge them to make change for children around the world? There’s still so much suffering to address in Afghanistan and across the globe. Millions of families are coping with the impact of COVID-19, climate change and hunger, while devastating conflicts are destroying childhood in countries like Syria, Yemen and Ukraine. But just last week, Congress passed a bill that cut $1 billion from humanitarian assistance at a time when children are struggling to survive and thrive. What I saw during my trip proves how powerful humanitarian assistance can be – but available funding falls far short of global needs. Please send a message to President Biden and Congress: our nation’s support is making a difference for children in Afghanistan, but we must continue to invest in every child’s future. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all that you do for children. |
