John,
It’s Equal Pay Day, the point in the new year women have to work to earn the same amount men did last year. Sign our petition to demand equal pay today! [[link removed]]
For domestic workers and so many caregivers, equal pay is not only about equal pay for equal work, it is also about equal valuing of the work that women do in the economy at large. Caregiving is essential work that enables millions to participate in the workforce knowing their homes and families are in good hands.
But caregivers are consistently undervalued in our economy. The average annual income of a home care worker is approximately $17,000 per year, and 82% of domestic workers don’t have a single paid sick day. And without paid leave, many family caregivers have been forced to drop out of the workforce to care for their loved ones.
We need to value women AND women’s work. If you agree, sign our petition demanding equal pay for women and increased respect for caregiving. [[link removed]]
More than 3 million women have left the workforce since the start of the pandemic. With schools and child care centers closed, and nursing homes unsafe for residents, care responsibilities have fallen back on our mothers and daughters.
From the boardroom to the classroom, gender inequity in the workplace fundamentally rests also on how we value, or fail to value, caregiving and care workers.
There’s a long way to go if we want to truly value women’s labor. Today is Equal Pay Day for women in general, but women of color still have to wait even longer to earn the same amount men did last year. While the average woman makes about 82 cents for every dollar earned by a white man, it’s just 63 cents for Black women, 60 cents for Native women, and 55 cents for Latinas. Asian and Pacific Islander women are paid 85 cents for every dollar, and within this group, there are more disparities. Vietnamese women earn 67 cents, Hmong women earn 61 cents, and Burmese women earn only 52 cents.
We need to value women and women’s work. Sign our petition to demand equal pay for equal work! [[link removed]]
