Hi friend,

Our team has spent the last few months diligently assessing voting records, bills, and actions from state leaders to create our 2021 California Environmental Scorecard.

We’ve been specifically looking at the political will and ambition of the State Legislature and Governor to move on major climate policy. For that, California received a pathetically low grade on climate.

The Golden State is no longer leading on global climate change. State leaders have their work cut out for them. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon even admitted a few months ago that California has fallen behind on climate leadership.

Friend, despite voters clamoring for action on climate, California did not deliver in 2021, as you can see by these numbers →

The numbers speak for themselves. Nearly every single Republican in the State Legislature took oil money, and their average score is shamefully miniscule.

But it’s not just Republicans, friend. Over half of Democrats took oil money, and the Democratic Party's supermajority in the Legislature did not lead to the kind of progress we need to urgently combat the climate crisis.

Still, we have reason for optimism. We have a number of true climate champions in Sacramento – 18 legislators scored 100%! For too long, the State Senate in particular has been where climate bills have gone to die, and yet in January they finally found the courage to pass meaningful climate legislation: our sponsored bill, the Climate Corporate Accountability Act (SB 260) by Senator Scott Wiener.

Today, I encourage you to take some time looking through the full Scorecard. See how your representatives did, make note of the champions who have been standing up for our communities, and make note of the climate delayers on both sides of the aisle who we must hold accountable and vote out this November.

Because our state and our planet can’t afford another repeat of 2021 this year.

Thanks for all you do.
