Friend,

From juicy steamed momos to simmering barbacoa to sticky sweet gulab jamun, Queens is home to one of the most diverse (and delicious) food scenes in the world. I could not be more grateful to live here, and more specifically Jackson Heights, where my neighbors speak 167 different languages and cook 25 different cuisines.

The restaurants and bars in New York are pillars of our communities, which is why I worked hard to introduce and pass S.7784 and S.2743 providing restaurants with temporary liquor licenses and retail permits, allowing them to get up and running quickly without the hindrance of bureaucratic red-tape. These bills were the first steps in reviving our local economy and supporting the small businesses that we love so much.

The next step is expanding the allowable offerings of restaurants, which is why I am thrilled to support Governor Hochul’s proposal to permanently allow restaurants and bars to serve to-go drinks. It is essential that we support our local businesses with the same passion and excitement that we did at the start of the pandemic.

Besides the obvious benefits of enjoying a cocktail at home with my takeout, this policy would be a huge revitalizer to our beloved hospitality industry. Throughout the pandemic, the Queens epicenter of food, culture, and hospitality was one of the industries hardest hit. 64% of New York’s restaurant workers were let go during the pandemic, a statistic felt especially deeply in Queens, the largest concentration of food workers in the country.

To-go drinks will allow our local restaurants and bars to draw more customers in, raise awareness of their businesses, generate more income, and of course, give their customers a fun experience. But to-go drinks are more than a fun idea – supporting this proposal directly supports the livelihoods of New York's restaurant workers and ensures that New York is once again the restaurant capital of the world.

If you’re looking for ways to pitch in, go support your local restaurants and bars, and then be sure to tip your delivery and food workers well. Here are a few of my Queens favorites!

And if you’re feeling generous, please consider chipping into our campaign’s fundraising efforts. We are on the frontlines of making tangible changes for our neighborhood food service workers and need as much support as possible.
