John,

I just wanted to take a moment to wish you and your family a Happy Fourth of July!

As I reflect on Independence Day, I think back to the early days of my career when I was in law school. At the time, I had no plans to run for office, and was on track to become an attorney.

But watching the twin towers fall on 9/11 forever changed my trajectory. My reaction was to join the Army, where I served in the 101st Airborne in Iraq, at Arlington National Cemetery, and then voluntarily deployed to Afghanistan with a Provincial Reconstruction Team.

Before I was fighting for our freedoms in the Senate, I was fighting to defend them overseas, and I know what it costs. I was fortunate enough to make it home, but there are many who did not.

So please, as you celebrate Independence Day, take a moment to remember those who sacrificed everything to defend our freedoms.

In Service,
Tom
