State of the Union: President Biden called on the U.S. Senate to pass the PRO Act to protect workers’ rights to unionize.

“When a majority of workers want to form a union – they shouldn’t be stopped.”

Labor unions have been front and center in the news over the past year, with high-profile union drives at Amazon warehouses and Starbucks stores across the country. We’ve also seen labor strikes at snack food factories, John Deere manufacturing plants, and hospitals. Public support for unions is higher than it's been since the 1960s, with about 68% of Americans telling Gallup that they approve of unions.

But despite all those popular actions and the high-profile media coverage that accompanied them, American union membership in 2021 actually declined by more than 240,000 workers, falling back to 2019 levels. Only about 1 in 10 American workers belongs to a labor union. How can this be? It has everything to do with power.

Both parties have launched attacks on unionization over the past 40 years – and workers are paying the price in low compensation, poor working conditions, and inadequate benefits. That’s why President Biden called on the U.S. Senate to pass the PRO Act to protect our right to unionize.

To get the PRO Act across the finish line, we need your help: Will you add your name to support workers’ rights to organize today?

Almost every level of government has enacted anti-union policies. Conservative think tanks promoted so-called right-to-work laws on a state level, ultimately making it harder for workers to form a union in more than half of the United States. The Supreme Court has made it harder for unions to form and function. And presidents have taken action to erode union power.

The PRO Act gives us an opportunity to federally overturn these anti-union policies. If it’s passed, the law will fine companies for violating workers’ rights, stop union-busting tactics, allow undocumented workers to unionize, and more. That means more workers would be able to join a union – which is great news because studies show unions raise pay and improve working conditions for all workers in a region, including non-union members.

The U.S. House already passed the PRO Act early last year – but now, the bill is facing an uphill battle in the Senate. That’s why we need grassroots supporters like you to join President Biden in standing up for our right to organize. Please, use your voice to speak out now:

Call on the Senate to pass the PRO Act and defend our right to organize!
