Ecosocialist Reading Group: Naomi Klein’s On Fire: the (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal
November 18 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Karl Marx, 1867: Even an entire society, a nation, or all simultaneously existing societies taken together, are not owners of the earth. They are simply its possessors, its beneficiaries, and have to bequeath it in an improved state to succeeding generations.
The Earth, 2019:Â Â You should really listen to this guy :-(
It’s impossible to build a socialist future without taking into account the ecological crises facing the planet. If you’re interested in learning more about the climate crisis as our opportunity and obligation to build a better world, and imagining what that world will look like, come join the Ecosocialist reading group. Our first meeting will be discussing the introduction of Naomi Klein’s On Fire: the (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal. 🌹 Bernie Sanders: What’s the Socialist Solution to the Climate Crisis?
November 19 @ 6:00 pm
Bernie Sanders: What’s the Socialist Solution to the Climate Crisis?
The destruction of the environment is accelerating at breakneck speed. The Amazon is burning. California is ablaze. Glaciers are melting rapidly. According to a devastating UN report, there are only 10 years before the cataclysmic impacts of the climate crisis will begin to be felt more fully. Communities of color, working-class people, and the global poor have borne and will disproportionately bear the burdens of the climate crisis.
Enraged by the criminal inaction of governments and corporations the world over, millions, spearheaded by the youth, have been taking to the streets to demand change. But what will it take to change society? Reports have found that just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions since 1988. How can we defeat these powerful forces and mitigate the climate disaster? Bernie Sanders and AOC call for a Green New Deal—how can we win this? Join us for an important discussion on these questions and get involved!

🌹 No One Is Illegal! A Webinar on Capitalism, Imperialism and Borders
November 21 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
https://act.dsausa.org/signup/no-one-illegal-webinar-capitalism-imperialism-and-borders/. Borders throughout the world have become sites of state violence, racist discrimination, and policing of workers freedom of movement. Governments from the US to Mexico, the EU and Israel to name just a few have militarized their boundaries, policed them with guards, forced migrants to take dangerous routes where they are losing their lives in record numbers, jailed those that survive in concentration camps, and exploited others as cheap labor denied the rights of workers with citizenship. On this webinar, experts on capitalism, climate change, imperialism and migration will explain the systemic roots of population displacement, the nature and function of the new border regime and present a case for working class unity against the oppression and scapegoating of migrants in the U.S. and throughout the world.

D4 is roughly U District, Eastlake, Fremont, Wallingford, Roosevelt, Ravenna, Bryant, Laurelhurst, Sand Point, View Ridge, and Wedgwood. The event is open to DSA members from other districts – or anyone curious about DSA!
The brewery is wheelchair accessible on both levels. People under 21 can attend! Non-alcoholic drinks are available (kombucha, ginger soda, root beer, etc). The brewery is fine with us bringing in food items – just no outside drinks. The bathrooms are not gender neutral.
