John,
Here are some updates from the last few days you may have missed.
Voters Sue for New Congressional Maps in Florida and Missouri
The 2022 elections are drawing closer and some states still don’t have new congressional maps in place. Two of those states are Florida and Missouri, and voters in both have filed impasse litigation asking courts to step in to enact new maps before the 2022 elections.
Florida redistricting has broken down into a stalemate between the governor and the Legislature. The Legislature passed a new congressional plan on March 4, but the governor has threatened to veto it. Accordingly, two lawsuits have been filed asking the courts to step in. Make sure to read our latest piece, “Redistricting Rundown: Florida” for more about what’s going on in the Sunshine State. [link removed]
Likewise, voters in Missouri filed a lawsuit last Friday asking a state court to enact a new map. Like Florida, Republican infighting has prevented Missouri Republicans from enacting a new map themselves. Find out more about the lawsuit here. [link removed]
Democrats Seek to Defend Arizona Mail-In Voting
Back in February, Republicans in Arizona filed a lawsuit against the state’s extremely popular no-excuse mail-in voting system. The complaint alleges it violates the Arizona Constitution because “[i]n-person voting at the polls on a fixed date (election day) is the only constitutional manner of voting in Arizona.”
Last week, several Democratic groups filed a motion to intervene to defend mail-in voting. They point out more than 88% of Arizona ballots were cast early in 2020 and changing this system would cause widespread confusion and potentially disenfranchise countless voters. Read more about the motion here. [link removed]
