A reminder that today 15 March at 4 pm there will be an online launch of a new research report on arming conflict, "Missing in action: UK arms export controls during war and armed conflict", by Prof. Anna Stavrianakis, University of Sussex.
The event will include an expert panel discussion with speakers including:
- Anna Stavrianakis, Professor of International Relations at the University of Sussex;
- Ali Jameel, Accountability and Redress Officer at Mwatana for Human Rights;
- Ryvka Barnard, Deputy Director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign;
- Katie Fallon Parliamentary Coordinator at Campaign Against Arms Trade.
Despite the UK’s commitment to a 'rigorus and robust' arms export control regime the outbreak of war or conflict has had little or no restraining effect on UK arms exports. Even where violations of human rights and humanitarian law are documented, UK arms export controls have not restricted transfers in any meaningful way.
This event explores the patterns of UK arms exports in the last two decades, with particular reference to arms exports to India and Pakistan in relation to Kashmir; to the Sri Lankan armed forces in the civil war; to Israel, used in the occupation of Palestine; and to the Saudi-led coalition in the war in Yemen.
