Dear Friend,

Breaking the Bias this International Women's Day

Each year we celebrate International Women's Day, our achievements and hard-won rights. And each year we're reminded by just how much further we've got to go in our struggle for equality and a safer society for women and girls.

Last week, I was incredibly proud to stand at the despatch box on International Women's Day, advocating on behalf of the incredibly brave women who've shared their experiences of abuse, being let down by the criminal justice system and the deep-rooted inequalities underpinning it all.

It's those brave women who gave me the courage to speak out too. I hope in sharing my own experiences, it can help break the stigma of abuse and embolden others to take the first step too.

With very best wishes,

Fundraising for Ukraine
It was a fantastic effort from The Secret Shed in Rhiwbina and the local community who came together to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees on Sunday. Many of us volunteered on the day, donated raffle prizes, baked cakes and over £3000 was raised! I know this will make a positive difference on the ground. Well done everybody!

Lots of local businesses in Cardiff North also donated their proceeds to charity including Siop Sero and The Flower Lodge in Rhiwbina. Siop Sero raised and donated £773.06.

On Saturday evening, I also attended a moving gathering in solidarity with the people of Ukraine organised by Friends of Llwynfedw Gardens and Maes Y Coed Community Centre. Thank you to all who organised, came to support and donated.
Ty Glas recycling centre
opens

It's great to see the new recycling centre on the ground of the old tax office up and running now after extensive lobbying from the Cardiff North Labour Team. It's been warmly welcomed by communities across Cardiff North and I'm sure it will make a positive difference.
Julie and I have been working with local community champion Paula Massey to request that the Council considers having a re-use shop on the site run by the local community. It's positive to hear that the community would like to be more involved and we look forward to hearing back.
A Budget for Cardiff Residents
It was great to hear Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas' fantastic speech on the Council's budget for Cardiff Residents. This budget will shield families from the Tory-made cost of living crisis, it provides investment in vital services, commits to retrofitting and insulating homes and much more. I'm proud of Labour's vision for communities across Cardiff. Watch Huw's speech below.
Golden BBQ Wins Best Kebab House in Wales
I'm so pleased that Golden BBQ in Birchgrove has won Best Kebab House in Wales at the annual Kebab Awards. We popped in to say congratulations while on our way doorknocking for the local elections.

There is strength in exposing your vulnerability and pain. Many won’t understand what it does take to leave that kind of relationship or why you stay for so long. Being able to talk about it now without fear or shame is as important as it is liberating. Click above to watch my speech.

Situation in Ukraine

It was incredibly moving last week to witness President Zelensky's address to Parliament - a true defender of freedom and democracy and a true leader. The response from the House was clear: We stand steadfast in solidarity with Ukraine.

With each passing day comes more despicable Russian attacks and distressing reports of the humanitarian situation on the ground. Thousands are desperately fleeing Ukraine- women and children leaving their brothers, sons and fathers behind to fight. Yet instead of creating an effective emergency response, the Home Office under Priti Patel's leadership continues with the bureaucratic hurdles that is preventing refugees getting to safety.

Every change announced to ease entry requirements has been due to pressure from Labour, but it shouldn't take getting hauled into the Commons for Patel to change her mind. This is a crisis that will not wait and if Patel cannot get this sorted, she should hand over the job to someone who can.

Cost of Living Crisis Spirals

The UK Government has let the cost of living crisis spiral since September - too concerned with saving their own skin than with supporting struggling families. The upcoming tax hike on top of sky rocketing prices will hit families hard. This week we've seen families are set to be hit by an annual rise of £400 in petrol costs. The Chancellor must halt the hike and back our plan for a one-off windfall tax on oil and gas producers to cut household bills by up to £600.

Chairing the new APPG on Deforestation
It was a great turnout to the APPG on Global Deforestation launch event in Parliament last week. I'm co-chairing the newly established APPG alongside Chris Grayling. At the event, we were joined by Environment Secretary George Eustice. We heard from people on the frontline of deforestation and discussed what was needed from UK Government to crack down on deforestation.
Casework Catch Up
DVLA Driving People Mad!

We've received many complaints about DVLA delays and poor service, with many having to go without a licence and being isolated from society as a result of delays. I'm helping constituents resolve their individual cases, but I'm also working with colleagues in Parliament to press the DVLA for a more efficient service.

Self-Isolation Support Scheme

For many, having to isolate as a result of Covid can be quite costly. My constituent was struggling due to delays in receiving self-isolation support. Following my intervention, my constituent received the support he was entitled to.

Cost of living Crisis

The cost of living crisis and rocketing prices are hitting families' wallets hard. Many constituents have raised concerns as the figures just don't add up. I'll continue to stand up for Cardiff North in Parliament and push for the UK Government to support families in need. Labour has a plan help with £600 off bills funded by a windfall tax on oil and gas companies. But the Government has decided not to act.
As always, please get in touch with your feedback!
