LEADING THE CHARGE AGAINST HB 1697
HONOLULU, HI – It has come to my attention that HB 1697 has passed the State House and will be under consideration by the State Senate. I am proud that our Republican House member, Bob McDermott, is leading the charge against its passage. Hawaii Republicans in the House and Senate believe that HB1697 is a direct assault on parental rights.
The Bill calls for the Department of Education to require sex education in our public schools which give positive and accurate representations “of LGBTQ+ people”. It requires the training of teachers and staff to be able to explain the nuances and differences in sexual behavior.
This subject does not belong in the curriculum of our public schools. Teachers should not be mandated to teach the subject. Let parents choose to inform their children in sensitive areas of sex education. It is their right as parents to inform their own children.
Public education has many challenges to offer - let's concentrate on the basics so that they can prepare to be productive citizens.
