Governor Evers Removes Racial Classifications from Homeowner Grant Program After WILL Letter
The final plan for a federally-funded housing assistance program, administered and designed by Governor Tony Evers’ administration, removed illegal racial classifications and eligibility categories identified in a January letter from WILL attorneys. WILL’s letter warned Governor Evers that race classifications are illegal. Government policies that classify people by race are presumptively invalid under the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution and Article 1, Section 1 of the Wisconsin Constitution.

WILL attorneys issued a letter to Elmbrook Schools Superintendent, Dr. Mark Hansen, warning the district that federal and state nondiscrimination law applies to all people and all students. WILL’s letter comes in response to the written report from the Elmbrook Assistant Superintendent that erroneously stated that a white student “is not a member of any class that is legally protected from discrimination by state or federal law.”

Summer 2022 Policy Internship
WILL is seeking a Policy Intern for Summer of 2022. The Policy Intern will provide research and administrative support to the staff of WILL. This will be a 3-to-4-month position with ability to extend based on performance. The ideal candidate would be a self-starter pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree with a concentration in Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Communications/Journalism, or Statistics. This is a paid opportunity and requires a minimum 15 hour per week commitment, although greater availability would be ideal.
